Powerful Underwater Earthquake Strikes Western Indonesia, Prompting Momentary Tsunami Alert

A powerful underwater earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck western Indonesia, causing a momentary tsunami alert and widespread panic among residents in the affected regions. The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be located 170 kilometers south of Teluk Dalam, North Sumatra.

As the ground tremors rippled through the provinces of West Sumatra and North Sumatra, residents on Mentawai Island were seen hurriedly retreating to higher ground on foot and motorcycles. The urgency of the situation prompted swift action, as areas in the proximity of the epicenter issued immediate evacuation orders to higher ground.

One of the areas significantly impacted by the earthquake was the Tanah Bala coastal territory in the South Nias regency, where authorities reported detecting tsunamis measuring 11 centimeters. Thankfully, the alert was lifted after approximately two hours, when the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency assessed the situation and deemed the threat to have passed.

The earthquake also caused damage to infrastructure and put lives at risk. In the village hospital, floor fissures forced the evacuation of numerous patients to the safety of the hospital yard. While there have been no reports of casualties at the time of writing, the authorities are closely monitoring the situation for any further developments.
